Welcome to Dantalian's Violin Sheet Music Page, containing information about our publications of Donald Martino's compositions for your instrument. Donald Martino was raised in the Italian tradition of clarinet virtuosity so it is no wonder that he has contributed significantly to the solo literature of many instruments. Here you will find his brilliant FANTASY VARIATIONS for Violin Solo, championed in the years following its birth by the extraordinary Paul Zukofsky who first recorded it for CRI, and in recent times by the equally extraordinary Rolf Schulte: "governs fantasy with impeccable logic...evocative references to tonality...a big Romantic piece" -The Boston Globe; and, "an impressive contribution to the violin solo repertory" - Notes. There is now a totally different brand of violin solo music, no less virtuosic, but tempered equally by pensive, lyric, deeply soulful episodes which seem somehow to dominate one's perception of the work. The ROMANZA (2002) is a more lyrical work than the FANTASY VARIATIONS. It might make a good Christmas present to yourself! There also is the early SONATA (No 1) with piano, written in Martino's Senior year in college. So strongly is it influenced by Bartok that Martino jokingly refers to it as "Bartok's third sonata." Hear Schulte play it on Centaur records.
And there is much chamber music, including:STRING QUARTET IV: "the emotional content is high...a quintexciting piece...dazzling" - The Los Angeles Times; "an intricately plotted, ferociously intense instrumental drama. The gestures are broad, uninhibited, full of expressive variety" - New York Magazine
TRIO for Clarinet, Violin and Piano: "its beauty of line and sonority is extraordinary. A work of great sensitivity and delicacy" -The Nation; "elegantly worked out and purified into a kind of crystalline beauty. The piece is remarkable for its way of linking up the instruments through careful control of color. Almost too beautiful" - New York Herald Tribune
The Pulitzer Prize-winning NOTTURNO: "endlessly fascinating...beautiful beyond belief, and not like anything else. " - The Boston Globe
The new octet SERENATA CONCERTANTE. For information about the concerto -- "there are things in the concerto that are so beautiful they take your breath away" - Boston Globe -- please see the Orchestra Page.
