VIOLA SHEET MUSIC
No bad jokes on Dantalian's Viola Music Page, just information about our publications of Donald Martino's compositions for your instrument. Mr. Martino has written with the viola's best characteristics in mind. The music is soulful, plaintive and never a display of meaningless virtuosity as in the style of some compositions of our time. There are two works with piano, separated by 40 years: The 1954 THREE DANCES -- much performed in it's day, retired and now revived --- recall the works of Bartok; the recent THREE SAD SONGS, composed for Samuel Rhodes through the generosity of the Cooledge Foundation, recall the music of Donald Martino. About the premiere of the SAD SONGS in Coolidge Hall of the Library of Congress, the Washington Post observed: "the first piece, 'Processional,' conveys the viola's yearning over chords in the piano. 'Reflections' begins with the piano line both whimsically and touchingly set against the plainive viola. As the assertiveness of their statements grows, so does the interplay between the parts. The viola solo that starts 'Soliloquoy and Cavatina' dies away but soon is joined by the distant ambient chimes of the piano."
But the viola plays an important role in a great many of Mr. Martino's chamber works, including the early STRING TRIO, four STRING QUARTETS, the QUARTET FOR CLARINET AND STRINGS, and:
The Pulitzer Prize-winning NOTTURNO:"endlessly fascinating...the piece swarms with color, delicious noises, and eerily magical gestures" - The Boston Globe; "the kaleidoscopic range of activity moves from beautiful accompanied melodies to overwhelming complexity. Textures so dense as to belie the fact that only six instrumentalists are playing give way to extatic suspensions or to whimsy or loneliness. Martino brings his great aural sensitivity to bear on the timbral quality of the mixed ensemble. Exquisite and dazzling combinations of instrumets abound." - American Music
STRING QUARTET IV: "an intricately plotted, ferociously intense musical drama. The gestures are broad, uninhibited, full of expressive variety" - New York Magazine; "has the immediacy of a vivid dream...unrelentingly dense, tense and active in its affect of physical experience beyond volition." - Fanfare
