We think you will be pleased with what you find. It is a very special page since Mr. Martino is, himself, an accomplished clarinetist and has contributed much to the literature of his instrument. There are the dapper unaccompanied miniatures such as the musical birthday cards 15 5 92 AB, VARIAZIONI SOPRA UN SOGGETTO CAVATO, the first to celebrate Arthur Berger's 80th birtday, the second to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Boston University based new music ensemble Alea III. Mr Martino premiered both works. Dantalian presents them in elegant color editions. CHARLES: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, was written for Charles Wuorinen for his 50th birthday. Mr. Martino was in Chicago for a performance of his TRIPLE CONCERTO and was unable to play the piece for Charles at his birthday party. There is also the piece for "clarino turned basso" B A B B IT T, written for Milton Babbitt's 50th birthday and premiered by Mr. Martino at a concert of the International Society for Contemporary Music in New Haven. All four of these works, under the title FOUR BIRTHDAY CARDS, have been performed by Jean Kopperud at various concerts. Finally among the solo pieces is the real clarino basso piece STRATA. There are works ranging in difficulty from GRAVE for the near beginner, SONATA for the intermediate player, and the now classic virtuoso solo piece A SET FOR CLARINET. You'll have a lot of fun with CANZONE E TARANTELLA written for Mr. Martino to perform with his cellist son in 1984 to celebrate the 80th birthday of the eminent Italian composer Goffreddo Petrassi. The cadenzas quote from Verdi's operas 'La Traviata' and 'Don Carlos.' Finally there is the 2003 TRIO with Cello and Piano commissioned by the New York New Music Ensemble and premiered by them on May 3rd, 2003 at Merkin Hall (the entire concert was a tribute to Mr. Martino)
