FLUTE SHEET MUSIC
Welcome to Dantalian's Flute Sheet Music Page. Here you will find information about our publications of Donald Martino's sheet music for your instrument, including two solo compositions, and his works that feature the flute prominently in the small ensemble context.
QUODLIBETS (Flute alone): "is an early work and might be classified as juvenalea, but, virtuosic and musically challenging, it made a fine show piece" - The New York Times
QUODLIBETS II (1979), an American Flute Association New Publication Award Winner: "The complex writing for flute is also a notated monologue for a great actor" - The Boston Globe. And Harvey Solberger , on stage, is just such a musical advocate.
FROM THE OTHER SIDE for Flute, Cello, Percussion and Piano, commissioned for the Australian Bicentennial and premiered in Sydney in 1988: "surprising, captivating, ventures from the sublime to the ridiculous. Who said that academics don't have a sense of humor?" - Fanfare. Of course, Martino has always been more of a teacher in the academy rather than a committed academic.
CONCERTO FOR WIND QUINTET: "A work of great fluidity with widely contrasting dynamics, registers, tempos, modes of attack and moods. Cadenza-like solos (the longest and most difficult are assigned to the clarinet and flute), duos, trios and quartets appear out of and reenter the major fabric of the piece, which builds to a final explosive tutti" - Notes
The Pulitzer Prize-winning NOTTURNO, commissioned by the Naumburg Foundation for Speculum Musicae: "Nocturnal Theater of the Soul" - The Boston Globe . Since its creation in 1973, NOTTURNO has been a favorate among new music ensembles.
The mixed octet SERENATA CONCERTANTE, commissioned by the Koussevitzky foundation, has had just one performance so far. The performers loved it!! The audience response was enthusiastic with one exception: the critic!!! But, according to Martino, the trip to New York made it possible to enjoy both a superb veal steak at Gabrieli's and a note-perfect performance by some of the city's finest, conducted by Anthiony Korf, who, by the way, received a grant from the Koussevitzky Foundation to commission the work. The ensemble, as you may have guessed, was the extraordinary new music group, PARNASSUS. Since this writing, SERENATA CONCERTANTE has had six additional performances with uniformly positive reactons from all quarters.
All compositions are recorded, in some cases on more than one label, except SERENATA CONCERTANTE.
