Welcome to Dantalian's Cello Page. Here you will find information about our sheet music publications of Donald Martino's compositions for your instrument. Mr. Martino was raised in the tradition of clarinet virtuosity so it is no wonder that he has contributed significantly to the solo literature of many instruments. On this page you will find his early SUITE OF VARIATIONS ON MEDIEVAL MELODIES for cello alone (a perfect recital piece for teacher and student alike), as well as the brilliant PARISONATINA'AL DODECAFONIA, a cello solo work commissioned by the brilliant Brazilian soloist, Aldo Parisot, who performed it more than 3 dozen times in the 1964 season. The work was originally presented to Parisot hand copied in 4 colors. Finally after almost a half century Dantalian, Inc has been able to produce a four color edition which much simplifies reading the work's web of instrumental colors. The work has been much applauded by audience and critics alike ("a whiz-bang virtuoso piece!" said The New York Times). But Martino has often said that the cello is his favorite instrument. Besides two concertos (see the Orchestra Page), he has featured his favorite instrument in much of his chamber ensemble music. There is the CANZONE E TARANTELLA (Clarinet & Cello), written in 1984 for Mr. Martino to perform with his then nine year old son. This 80th birthday gift to the eminent Italian composer Goffreddo Petrassi is lots of fun to play as it quotes first from Verdi's 'La Traviata' then from his 'Don Carlos'). There is the recent (1998)SERENATA CONCERTANTE written for committed professionals.., and performed extensively on the"New Music Cercuit." Finally there is the 2003 TRIO for Cl, Vcl & piano commissioned by the New York New Music Ensemble and premiered by them on May 3rd, 2003 in Merkin Hall and the 5th STRING QUARTET premiered by the Lydian String Quartet at Brandeis University in March of 2005(for the glowing review see premiers.htm
The 1974 Pulitzer Prize-winning NOTTURNO: "a remarkable creation...lyrical and evocative music of great sensitivity." - The American Record Guide
4th STRING QUARTET: "emotes in no uncertain terms...has the immediacy of a vivid dream, and the irrationality...dense, tense and action filled." - Fanfare This fourth string quartet was commissioned by the Cooledge Foundation of the Library of Congess for the Juilliard String Quartet who performed during its 1984-5 and 1985-6 seasons. The work won the Kennedy Center Friedheim Award of 1985.
FROM THE OTHER SIDE for Flute, Cello, Piano, and Percussion was commissioned for the Australian Bicentennial: "Disquieting and tongue in cheek, yet superbly sculpted, the work thoroughly entertains and challenges" - Piano Guild
