178 CHORALE HARMONIZATIONS
OF J.S. BACH

Thanks for stopping by.   This page offers two unusual and useful products developed by Donald Martino out of personal necessity.   Work on 178 CHORALE HARMONIZATIONS OF J.S. BACH spanned two decades on and off. In the early 1960s when Mr. Martino was teaching Theory at Yale it was his practice to assemble on one page and in perfect alignment the different settings that Bach made of certain chorale tunes.  These, for easier comparison, he transposed to the same key.  In this way students could witness the diversity of the master's methods, often witnessing a progression from a simple point-against-point setting to a setting so complex as to be considered a variation.  These pages of examples were more than lessons in theory, they were lessons in composition.  Twenty years later, long since liberated from the teaching of harmony, Mr. Martino decided to share his idea with the rest of us and he added about 140 more settings to create 178 CHORALE HARMONIZATIONS OF J.S. BACH: A COMPARATIVE EDITION FOR STUDY

"Donald Martino's comparative edition of 178 chorale settings offers the teacher of tonal music theory a remarkable resource, one which should be very attractive to those who (as I do) regard the Bach harmonizations as repertory unmatched for introduction to the beauties and intricacies of tonal music.  The correlation of various settings of the same chorale melody in a way that will be accessible to teacher and student alike is a splendid idea"- Allen Forte

The idea for STRINGOGRAPH came to Mr. Martino when he was composing Fantasy-Variations in 1964.  Why not construct a mock violin fingerboard to facilitate the testing of violin passages?  Through the years Mr. Martino used his Violinograph as needed.  Then in 1970 while working on his Cello Concerto he constructed Cellograph.  The mock viola was added to complete the set when Dantalian was incorporated in 1978.  STRINGOGRAPH was born!

"WOW!  With Stringograph I could have written an even better Violin Concerto.  You can bet I'm now using it in Heaven"- Ludwig Van

"Boy, O Boy, O Boy!  If I'd had this little baby, I could have spent so much more time playing tennis" - Miklos Rozsa, Max Steiner, Charlie Chaplin, and countless others.
