Lubricate those casters and wheel your instrument right up to Donald Martino's Piano Sheet Music Page. (For information about the concerto, please see our Orchestra page). Donald Martino's contribution to the piano's solo literature has been significant. All of his piano compositions have been recorded at least twice, some of them three times! Performers observe that the music is particularly grateful to play -- even pianistic, yet Martino can barely play a simple pop tune at the piano. But Mr. Martino has gravitated to this instrument again and again throughout his career, because for him it is "the orchestra of instruments." And so he writes for it!
"Donald Martino has written several significant piano works, FANTASIES AND IMPROMPTUS is his masterpiece" - David Burge, Clavier ; "a landmark of American piano music" "a half hour of romantic and beautiful music"- Andrew Porter, New Yorker; "feverish impetuosity, yearning melancholy, grand gestures, sheer physical exhilaration of the piano writing"- Peter G. Davis, New York Magazine; "one of the major piano works of the last decade"- Tim Page, Newsday
IMPROMPTU FOR ROGER: "a winning dapper miniature" - The New Yorker
FANTASY: "Remarkably wide-ranging, fantastic in its effect and statement" - The Boston Globe
SUITE IN OLD FORM: "intended for student performers {though suitable for adults, ed.} the piece is utterly charming without being condescending" - The New York Times
TWELVE PRELUDES: " Martino's gorgeous array of gestures, jazzy rhythms, warbles, arabesques, and titilating harmony danced in our ears" - The Boston Globe; "They are traced with a light hand, span many moods, and are finely, delicately wrought"- Andrew Porter, The New Yorker
PIANISSISSIMO: "a half hour sonata, strenuous and powerful. The title refers not to an extreme of softness but to pushing the modern piano and its player to the limits of their resourses." - Andrew Porter, The New Yorker; "has a certain crystalline grandeur"- Tim Page, Newsday
"PIANISSISSIMO, FANTASIES AND IMPROMPTUS and THE PRELUDES to a listener offer some of the most eloquent, personally expressive music of our day. Martino's music is called linear or narrative; through the labrinths of structural device, an individual voice is speaking, warmly and clearly"- Andrew Porter, The New Yorker
N.b. All criticisms except those of David Burge followed Martino's 60th Birthday concert in New York. David Holzman was the pianist.
